Description
Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a major public health problem in Sudan. The disease was hyper-endemic in the East, but during the last decade the country has been passing through difficult times and continuous changing situations, where the civil war in the south, the emergency of drought and desertification, then the rains and floods ended with a food gap which led to the spread of vitamin A deficiency nearly all over the country. This study was a cross-sectional study using motherhood method for collecting data. The study was conducted among 160 mothers having 295 children in the age groups between 6 months--10 years in four groups of low socio-economic status. Two of thegroups were living in urban slums (Daralsalam and Alsemeir) and the other two groups were living in pockets with populations of low socio-economic status within areas of high socio-economic status (Alryad and Shambat New Extension).
